How to take care of your car when it has been parked for a while

If your car hasn’t been used for a long time, there are things you can do to get it running properly when you’re ready to go out for a drive again.

Here’s a list of car maintenance tips to help keep your car in good condition:

Start and move the car

Be sure to start and drive the car periodically. Starting the car every now and then will help your car battery work properly. And whether you’re driving on the street or only moving the car a few feet into your driveway, this will help your tires maintain proper air pressure.

Prepare your car for the warmer weather

Now that cold weather is in your rearview mirror, here are some simple things you can do to get your car ready for the warmer weather  and more frequent trips:

  • Clean the inside of your car: Let’s face it, items tend to accumulate in our cars during the cold winter months. Now that the temperature is rising, add car cleaning to your to-do list.
  • Wash the exterior of your car: If you can, take your car to the car wash or give it a good old-fashioned wash in the driveway. Whether you use a hose or a bucket of soap and water, a quick wash will leave your car sparkling and ready to go. If you want to do a more thorough job, use a handheld vacuum and also clean the interior of your car.

Take a look under the hood

Raise the hood of the car and remove leaves or debris from or around the engine. Clogs can cause problems for some parts of the car, so you’ll want to make sure everything is clean.

Check your car’s fluid levels

Check the level of the air conditioning, windshield wiper and brake fluids. If they are not at the recommended levels, refill the fluids at home or take note to take the car to the mechanic for maintenance once you hit the road again.

Park in the shade

Protect your car from sun and heat damage by parking it in the shade if you don’t have a garage available. Another option is to purchase a windshield sunshade or car cover to protect the interior and exterior of your car.

Keep the gas tank full

Be sure to fill your gas tank before you leave the car for an extended period of time. This will prevent condensation from building up in the gas tank and will make it last longer.

Do not use the parking brake excessively

Try not to use the parking brake for a long time. Using the parking brake for too long can cause it to stick and cause problems later. If you need to prevent the car from rolling for a long period, try using some parking stops around the wheels.

Most importantly, while taking care of your stationary car, be sure to take care of yourself too. We care about you!
